To some degree I think Hollywood and end of the world survival movies (as well as certain aspects of religion) have biased us to see ourselves always in the role of survivor rather than among the millions and millions who are wiped out.
Similar to seeing ourselves as Nephi from the Book of Mormon and rarely if ever considering ourselves like Laman and Lemuel. We're always the righteous, never the wicked, always the religiously correct, never the religiously blind. Always the followers of the true prophets, never the false ones. Always the pure (good-enough), never the corrupt scheduled for disaster.
Pride seems to over-identify with the victors of history and heroes of scripture. It's blinding. I noticed this in myself years ago and have since tried to repent.
